Knuts About Knitting: Brands That Changed Our Life

Hiya, Darlings! This little missive kicks off our “Free Time Fun” category, so we can gush over one of our absolute fave free-time-fun activities.

Haters may call it old-school, but we promise you all the cool kids are doing it. Of course we’re talking about knitting. And not just any knitting but the most darlingiest (and addictive) knitting projects and yarns you ever did see.

Quick math: Adorb wool plus these cute “knit kits” equals stuff that even I can whip up in nothing flat.  Amazing. And, addictive. Or so says Kim’s hubby.

They say knitting is the new yoga, and boy is it ever true: it’s the ultimate unwind on a weekend, on a plane or just about anywhere, any time. We can hardly contain our excitement…starting with a company we love from London called Wool and the Gang (cute), as well as We Are Knitters … both of which have brought us oodles of peace, tranquility and lots of yarny fun.

Now, each sells crazy-beautiful wools for making everything from chunky sweaters to those arm-knit blankets all over YouTube. They are trendy and chic plus oh-so beautiful (did we say they’re beautiful?). The yarn is cruelty-free. The colors are on point. The sweater knitting is yummy. The wins are flying all around.

My first cardi (thank you, We Are Knitters)! Do you love this color as much as I do? For as vibrant as my brand’s riding and resort wear is, I think this softer hue is a perfect neutral. The name of the card is the Simone.

Truth: Even if you’ve never picked up needles, diehard makers tend to think that we all have some deeply recessed knit-skillz in our souls. And for Kim at Middy N’ Me, those went untapped until a couple of years ago.

“I was visiting my sister,” says Kim, “and one night while we were yakking, and she was crocheting (she had always kept up with the crocheting our grandma taught us as girls), I got the bug just by watching her and said, ‘I want to re-learn how to crochet, and I want to learn how to knit!’ Next thing I knew, I was hooked. No pun intended. (…Well, yes: Kinda!)

“And then, don’t you know, after I flew home from that visit, I was pleasantly reminded of a little store in town called The Artful Yarn—the one that months earlier I’d thought, ‘Who goes into a yarn store?!'”

Look at this adorableness. This is Kim’s Olive, napping on the Wooly Young Thing cardigan in Cinnamon Dust from Wool And The Gang. (Click the pic to so see it for yourself.) It’s Kim’s newest project. “Fingers crossed, I hope to be finished by fall.”

Since then, Kim has taken classes at that little store and ordered enough skeins that she’s up to her eyeballs…and, has enough Pinterest pins brimming with pics of someday-maybe projects that’ll keep her busy for years to come!
